Volkner is the Gym Leader of Sunyshore City's Gym, known officially as the Sunyshore Gym. He hands out the Beacon Badge to Trainers who defeat him. He specializes in Electric-type Pokémon.

Volkner is friends with Flint, and has become dejected and depressed because no worthy challengers have come to Sunyshore in a while. He has been considering challenging the Elite Four and spends all his time renovating the Gym's electrical equipment, which puts a strain on Sunyshore's power supply and causes a blackout.

Trivia about Volkner

~ To follow the pattern of every Electric-type Gym Leader's military-style clothing, Volkner wears a military uniform similar to that of the dress uniform of Turkish troops.

~ Volkner being bored with weak Trainers and few challengers can also be seen in Drake, leader of the Orange League, who had the same feeling, except Drake wasn't just letting challengers take the Winner's Trophy without battling.

~ In the anime, Volkner is the only Sinnoh Gym Leader Ash battled to use his in-game party from Platinum.
